To chase them, secretly, through the streets like the paparazzi is what we were asked to do on this day. Travis wanted to ask Reia the “big question” and wanted to do it with the backdrop of Niagara Falls to tell their story. To be sure that Reia did not question his motives or wonder what was happening he planned a weekend trip which aligned with his birthday.
We were exhilarated, as there is nothing like having to do your job in full secrecy and keep your fingers and toes crossed that you do not get seen while trying to capture this moment. We had reviewed with Travis in advance the route he planned to take her on, leading her towards where he would fall to one knee, and when needed sent him a text message or two to dictate the next step. “Who is that dear?” Reia would ask. “Just another birthday wish”, Travis would respond.
After getting all done up for a nice birthday dinner, it was time to go for a walk, take in the tourist sites and take a stroll along the Falls. As the best spies do, or so we hear, we weaved our way through the crowd at just the right moment to ensure our arrival at the pre-selected proposal sight in advance of this wonderful couple. As we set in our “secret” positions to photograph this moment in their lives, Travis had Reia zoned into their conversation as passersby could see what was happening and politely avoided the front of the camera for the most part. Within a few minutes of standing by the Falls, Travis lowered to a knee and popped the question, to which many tears of joy followed.
Once we had emerged from the shadows, Reia was shocked at the level of planning that had gone into the preservation of this moment. Following some more precious imagery, we all sat down and discussed how this all came to be. With each new detail, or puzzle piece, Reia was shocked and overwhelmed at how this moment in their relationship was curated carefully.
It was an absolute honour to be invited into and become a part of this ruse. We are always down for fun and find it so intriguing each time we get to be a part of an engagement session. There is something different when we are literally capturing a story as it unfolds, ensuring that each moment is documented and that this story can be completely told and passed on in the years to come.
