Bringing the Vision to Life | Kriselene’s Cinderella-Inspired Fairytale Shoot
I’ve been photographing Kriselene since she was a baby, and I still remember chasing her around, trying to keep up with her endless energy. Fast forward to now, and she’s still got that same spirited charm—only now in a gown, twirling like a princess.
For a girl of Latin descent, turning 15 is a day they look forward to, as in accordance with culture, this birthday called their “Quinceañera” is the moment signifying their transition into a young woman. But in 2020, things were different. In the middle of a global pandemic, we were told to stay inside, keep a safe distance, and avoid large gatherings. Imagine looking forward to something for 15 years only to be told, “You have to wait a little longer.”
Enter Super Mom Laura. How does one find a way to navigate through regular activities in an unprecedented time? As I’m sure you’ve seen, a trend emerged during the pandemic, car parades of family and friends celebrating special moments. Laura did just that for Kriselene. As the cars lined up at the end of the block and an amazingly decorated cake was set up outside their apartment building in Toronto, Kriselene was led out to a waiting surprise.
We love to document, to tell stories through imagery that needs no words. The emotions on Kriselene’s face were evident—she was able to celebrate her significant birthday in true pandemic fashion. Though a bigger celebration was sure to follow when the world emerged on the brighter side of the pandemic, this car parade was a way to tell this young lady just how much she was loved.
Inspired by the timeless tale of Cinderella, we wanted to create a photoshoot that felt straight out of a storybook. To bring her story to life, we chose the enchanting Casa Loma in Toronto, a castle-like setting perfect for a fairytale-inspired shoot. And just like Cinderella’s grand staircase moment, we ventured to the Baldwin Steps, adding an extra touch of elegance.
But what made it even more magical? Kriselene brought along a live hamster, her own version of Cinderella’s little animal companions. This whimsical, playful touch reflected her personality and made the session truly unique. It was a reminder that childhood magic doesn’t fade, it evolves. With every twirl, laugh, and candid moment, we told a story of joy, transformation, and the beauty of growing up.
