This stunning celebration took place at Hernder Estate Wines, a beautiful venue in St. Catharines offering a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern elegance. The winery provided the ideal backdrop for Dave and Seetha’s unique and intimate wedding, with breathtaking views and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
The evening before their wedding, rain and thunder loomed over St. Catharines, leaving uncertainty about the weather. But on their big day, the sun shone brightly, with dramatic clouds setting the dramatic stage for an outdoor ceremony.
Dave and Seetha’s wedding blended their Guyanese and Sri Lankan heritage with a mix of traditions. Alongside a traditional Christian reading, they incorporated the Poruwa ceremony, a Sri Lankan Sinhalese custom rich with symbolic rituals.
On a beautifully decorated wooden platform—the poruwa—the couple stepped up with their right feet, representing their shared home and the foundation of their marriage. Rituals included the exchange of betel leaves as an offering to the gods, tying of their pinky fingers by a maternal uncle, and the pouring of holy water as mothers and aunts chanted blessings. The ceremony concluded with a family member breaking a coconut to ward off misfortune and bless the couple’s future together.
From start to finish, Dave and Seetha’s wedding was a joyful, heartfelt celebration. Their beloved fur baby, Charlie, stole the show in a matching tuxedo, while the post-ceremony portraits delivered a hilarious twist when the groomsmen dropped their pants (tastefully) to outdo the bridesmaids’ playful poses.
Inside the winery, the warm, rustic decor provided the perfect ambiance for a cozy and elegant reception. They danced to the sound of music and laughter surrounded by close family and friends. The wedding cake, a beautiful creation, was lovingly made by a family member, adding a special personal touch to the day.
As with any wedding, we approached the day with a photojournalistic style, capturing moments as they naturally unfolded without altering or disrupting the couple’s vision. Of course, the portrait session allowed for a more stylized approach, but the authenticity of the day’s emotions remained at the forefront of our storytelling.
